Genuine faith transforms the heart and produces fruit in obedience. Rather, they teach that sin is <strong>still serious<\/strong>, but that believers are <strong>justified once for all<\/strong> in Christ. Salvation cannot be lost <em>because<\/em> it is God&#8217;s work from beginning to end (Phil. 1:6), but true believers will <strong>persevere<\/strong> in faith and repentance. Ongoing sin calls for discipline (Heb. 12:6), and believers are exhorted to pursue holiness (Heb. 12:14). The absence of a post-death purification (like purgatory) does not mean believers are instantly perfected <em>by themselves<\/em>\u2014they are made perfect by <strong>God\u2019s sovereign grace<\/strong> (1 Cor. 15:52-53).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th><strong>Verse<\/strong><\/th><th><strong>Text (NKJV)<\/strong><\/th><th><strong>Explanation<\/strong><\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Romans 6:1-2<\/td><td>\u201cShall we continue in sin that grace may abound? They think God won\u2019t tolerate a saint in heaven praying for you.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Protestants affirm <strong>intercessory prayer among the living<\/strong>, as the Bible commands Christians to pray for one another. However, they reject <strong>praying <em>to<\/em> the dead<\/strong>, including saints, because Scripture teaches that there is <strong>one mediator<\/strong> between God and man\u2014<strong>Jesus Christ<\/strong>. Nowhere in Scripture is prayer directed to departed believers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th><strong>Verse<\/strong><\/th><th><strong>Text (NKJV)<\/strong><\/th><th><strong>Explanation<\/strong><\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>1 Timothy 2:5<\/td><td>\u201cFor there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.\u201d<\/td><td>Christ alone is our heavenly intercessor.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Romans 8:34<\/td><td>\u201cIt is Christ who died\u2026 who also makes intercession for us.\u201d<\/td><td>Jesus, not saints, intercedes for us in heaven.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Hebrews 7:25<\/td><td>\u201cHe always lives to make intercession for them.\u201d<\/td><td>Jesus continually intercedes for believers.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>James 5:16<\/td><td>\u201cPray for one another\u2026 The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.\u201d<\/td><td>Believers are to pray for each other on earth.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Deuteronomy 18:11<\/td><td>\u201c\u2026or one who calls up the dead.\u201d<\/td><td>Contacting the dead is explicitly forbidden.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Protestants firmly believe in <strong>intercessory prayer<\/strong>\u2014but only <strong>among the living<\/strong>, as Scripture teaches. Prayer is always <strong>to God<\/strong>, and the only heavenly intercessor is <strong>Jesus Christ<\/strong>. Asking a deceased saint to intercede is neither taught in Scripture nor practiced by the early church in the New Testament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prayer is clearly defined by Jesus. In fact, there is a passage where Jesus specifically tells how to pray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;The Lord&#8217;s Prayer&#8221;<\/strong> or more accurately, <strong>&#8220;The Model Prayer.&#8221;<\/strong> It is found in <strong>Matthew 6:9\u201313<\/strong>, where Jesus explicitly instructs His disciples <strong>how<\/strong> to pray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th><strong>Element<\/strong><\/th><th><strong>Focus<\/strong><\/th><th><strong>What it teaches<\/strong><\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>&#8220;Our Father in heaven&#8221;<\/td><td><strong>To whom we pray<\/strong><\/td><td>Prayer is directed to <strong>God the Father<\/strong>.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>&#8220;Your kingdom come&#8221;<\/td><td><strong>God&#8217;s will<\/strong><\/td><td>We align ourselves with <strong>God\u2019s purposes<\/strong>, not ours.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>&#8220;Give us\u2026 forgive us\u2026 lead us\u2026&#8221;<\/td><td><strong>Our needs<\/strong><\/td><td>It&#8217;s okay to bring <strong>personal requests<\/strong> to God.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>&#8220;Deliver us from the evil one&#8221;<\/td><td><strong>Spiritual warfare<\/strong><\/td><td>We ask for <strong>protection and guidance<\/strong>.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus taught His followers to pray <strong>directly to the Father<\/strong>, not to saints or intermediaries. While sacraments like baptism and the Lord\u2019s Supper are not the <strong>cause<\/strong> of grace, Protestants affirm they are <strong>visible signs and seals<\/strong> of God\u2019s promises, used by the Holy Spirit to <strong>nurture faith<\/strong> (not generate it by themselves). What they affirm is that after the apostles died, <strong>only Scripture remains as the infallible rule of faith and practice<\/strong>. The church\u2019s traditions must be tested <strong>by<\/strong> Scripture (Acts 17:11). The Bible is not a dead letter\u2014it is <strong>living and powerful<\/strong> (Heb. 4:12), breathed out by the Holy Spirit (2 Tim. 3:16). Apostolic tradition was preserved <strong>in writing<\/strong>, and it is the only infallible standard. The Holy Spirit <strong>does not contradict<\/strong> the Word He inspired. They replace it with emotionalism, singing, and even altered states of mind.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Protestants <strong>reject the Catholic doctrine<\/strong> of the <strong>Mass as a repeated sacrifice<\/strong> because the Bible clearly says Christ&#8217;s sacrifice was <strong>once for all<\/strong> (Heb. 10:10, 14). However, Protestants <strong>do not<\/strong> treat the Lord\u2019s Supper as a meaningless ritual. Protestants believe the Supper is a <strong>means of grace<\/strong>\u2014not a re-sacrifice, but a <strong>spiritual communion with Christ<\/strong>, where believers are strengthened in faith.
